The objective in this pilot area is to improve the efficiency of fishing operations, while decreasing the pressures on the marine and coastal environment. The wild fisheries sector is highly dependent on met-ocean and water quality information and needs a frequent update of the oceanic and meteorological conditions in order to plan their activities and for ensuring safety in their daily operations. They also require information from several hydrodynamical, hydrological and water-quality as a proxy of areas of high probability of finding fishing grounds. Capitalizing existing observations and modelling capacities (www.euskoos.eus/en), this pilot project will provide information needed to better understand some key environmental drivers and will co-design and develop key new products and services for the fisheries sector.
The forecast data used for the services in this pilot area are mostly based on the CROCO numerical modeling tool used in EuskOOS (Basque Operational Oceanography System) to estimate the spatiatemporal evolution of the main physical variables of the marine environment in the South-Eastern Bay of Biscay.
